Admittedly if investments of this sort were to be known there would be a long queue of worthy sectors with their hands out. Before we descend into talk of disastrous borrowing and overspending have a look at this table.

Years in office since Labour 28 Conservative 42 total 70 Total net borrowing Original prices Lab If government A causes a financial collapse government B will have to borrow to support the services that would otherwise go pop.

The question then is, would you rather government B simply cut those services or borrow to support them until growth and the economy is fixed? The reason Labour have only been in for half the time of the conservatives is because is takes them that long to re-build trust with the public after previously trashing the economy — and for the conservatives to right the economy without selling off … Read more ».

A bit like Corbyn would do Nationalising the world. Well done Nathan. I was starting work in the late sixties and then lived through the chaos of the seventies Labour Government. Very few people born since about realise the mess we were in and how much the and the long term Tory Government did to bring us back from the brink of ruin. I assume that all the above contributors will be making their inaugural speeches to the reformed Monday Club…much back-slapping and right-wing guff!

How to relate British history with a one-eyed Daily Mail view of British politics. Maybe I can draw you attention to the state of the economy in after the 13 wasted years of Tory administration. The then Chancellor, Regi Maudling, reputedly passed his successor, Jim Callaghan, in No 11 and apologised for the mess. Jim thought that he was referring to the state of the office, but when he opened the books….. Callaghan wanted to resign on the spot!

When the Wilson government took over from Ted Heath the Golden Years of the 3 day week do you suppose that they were being handed a healthy economy. By and large, successive governments have been … Read more ». Oh boy, did you not read my original comment. Wiki etc are irrelevant. I was there. I know what happened. So was I chum…. To think the carriers are a replacement to me is folly. They perform completely different if complimentary roles. Replacements for O should absolutely be in the NSS which was a hollow plan by a Govt unprepared to invest further in defence.

Then the budget needs to be enshrined in law like the overseas aid budget then we can afford a decently sized, equipped armed forces. RN needs 26 escorts frigate and destroyers. Perhaps overseas aid budget could fund a replacement for Ocean. Transfer the Puma force as well. Ensure the Foreign aid budget is spent only on humanitarian aid and only British manufactured or surplus goods can be provided.

Keep the Helicopter and naval force as back up … Read more ». I am all for this type of realignment of resources. However to facilitate it would mean leaving the accepted global current Aid rules — which I totally think we should. HI Ian, I dont think you are right, when I looked this up a couple of weeks ago there are some types of aid that can be included, but I do not believe it to be prescriptive on how you spend the money and it does not state equipment must be new.

I think we could turn the ships and helicopters under the command of the UN or even have the Red Cross or MSF direct operations with our guys doing the risk assessments etc.

So essentially we would let these organisations do what they want — but buy, fund … Read more ». Loans were given to buy US manufactured equipment. Ha ha, spot on. Sadly we have a government that has a backbone made of jelly, and the opposition is totally spineless….

Commonality of lower deck layout and machinery would be worth some savings surely. The refit began in and included maintenance and upgrades to troop accommodation and aviation support facilities for the Apache helicopter. The vessel will provide accommodation, logistical support and landing facilities for Lynx and Puma helicopters.

The hull design is based on the design of the Invincible Class aircraft carrier also built by Vickers with a modified superstructure. The building schedule included hull construction by Kvaerner Govan on the River Clyde and sailing under its own power to the BAE Systems shipyards at Barrow-in-Furness for the military equipment fit.

The ship carries a crew of , an aircrew of and Royal Marine Commandos. An additional marines could be accommodated in a short-term emergency. HMS Ocean is capable of transporting and sustaining an embarked military force of up to people equipped with artillery, vehicles and stores. The ship has capacity for 40 vehicles but is not designed to land heavy tanks. The ship has full facilities for 12 EH Merlin and six Lynx helicopters , plus landing and refuelling facilities for Chinook helicopters.

Others argue we could maintain her in usable condition as a low-readiness asset without great expense. As an example of how it can be done, HMS Bulwark is currently non-operational in Devonport but has a skeleton crew and is being maintained in a much better state than her sister Albion when she was kept in mothballs between Albion required a two and a half year refit to bring her back to fighting condition. Despite the very uncertain future for the two LPDs, the RN is making the best use of them and underlining the value of amphibious forces.

If true, the Brazilians will probably be getting a bargain but it is unclear if the sale includes the LCVP landing craft , powerful Artisan radar system, the three Phalanx mounts and assorted other removable equipment needed to make her an effective warship. She was built to mostly commercial design standards with a nominal year hull life which has been reached. There are plenty of other warships that have, and will have to, serve the RN far beyond their intended lifespan. With more regional interests, the Brazilian navy is unlikely to run her as hard, or deploy her as far as the RN would, so will probably be able to keep her going for another 10 years.

Like almost any type of kit, the running costs will increase with age and spares may harder to find. Procurement done this way perhaps should be considered more often for specialist ships. In contrast, the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers QEC take the complete opposite approach, designed to the highest warship survivability standards and intended to last 50 years, if properly maintained and upgraded. Excitement grows as HMS Queen Elizabeth makes continuous good progress towards initial operating capability.

We still strongly contend that using the carriers in this way is unsound , inviting risk and putting too many eggs in one basket.
