You must be wondering where people are getting all these unauthorized injections. Silicone is easily available. Untrained and unlicensed people looking for a quick buck in the plastic surgery industry are usually the ones administering and providing these unsafe procedures.
When seeking ANY medical procedure, always ask to see credentials and ask for experience. Do your research! At these parties, individuals inject each other with raw silicone and other unsanitary fillers. Doing these pumping parties can be very hazardous. Often at pumping parties, the breasts, calves, buttocks, face lips, and hands are injected.
As you can imagine, unlicensed medical professionals injecting non-FDA approved materials into others in an unsterile environment can inevitably lead to disastrous results. In my experience, I recently had a patient come in citing pain on her buttocks. She had explained to me she had silicone injected by a family doctor in Tijuana, Mexico. Instead of being put under, the family doctor injected her buttocks with industrial grade silicone. After the consultation, it was apparent that I needed to removed the silicone granulomas.
Silicone granulomas result as a reaction to liquid silicone. They are silicone nodules that form around the site where silicone was injected. These little or large silicone granulomas can cause excessive pain and discomfort. To be clear, the silicone we are talking about is raw liquid silicone. The FDA issued a safety alert late last year warning the public of the catastrophic risks involved with liquid silicone injections in particular.
Still, the insidious goo is an infamous troublemaker. Subtract an experienced injector from the equation, and silicone goes from dicey to deadly.
It's not uncommon for these unlicensed practitioners—inexperienced with human anatomy—to inadvertently shoot silicone into a blood vessel. And when they do, it can travel to the heart or lungs, blocking blood flow, and causing sudden heart attacks and strokes. The risk is especially high when injecting the vascular buttocks. In light of the recent wave of silicone horror stories, and with butt augmentation fast becoming one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.
Many dermatologists and surgeons do use FDA-approved cosmetic fillers "off-label" here— to either produce an immediate, yet temporary, lift from hyaluronic acid gels; or a gradual, long-term improvement from the collagen-stimulating Sculptra which is currently only approved to soften the appearance of nasolabial folds. The FDA does not know the true extent of these injuries caused by these procedures because unlicensed practitioners do not report injuries incurred from their illegal practice and patients who are harmed may not know to alert the FDA.
In addition to prosecuting the criminals who take advantage of consumers, the FDA is taking action to educate consumers in order to prevent the serious injuries resulting from these injections. With our communication today, we hope to raise public awareness about the short- and long-term risks of injecting silicone directly into the body, and encourage consumers to choose FDA-approved products and licensed providers when considering any type of cosmetic enhancement.
The FDA has participated in a number of criminal enforcement actions in recent years that resulted in the arrest and sentencing of unlicensed practitioners who illegally used these unapproved injections on patients.
Two Miami spa owners were arrested in February and recently sentenced to four and six years in prison for managing a spa that performed illegal silicone injections.
The number of treatments needed will depend on the amount of augmentation desired. Usually, a series of treatments spaced at monthly intervals can provide the best results. By allowing adequate time for collagen production between treatments, injection placement can be adjusted to provide the most natural-looking results. Levine will discuss with you what treatment schedule will best suit your specific needs.
