Gabled Ends Gabled ends for the roof usually take 10 logs per end. Take Out the Guesswork Now, this log calculation makes several assumptions about the lengths of logs, the diameter of the logs and the size of the building. TruLog Product Catalog.

Ask Ted! More Valuable Reading. Waste will probably be bad. I like having several length piles. The present job stacked to 18 rows main level, 35 rows in 2 gables and 52 rows in one gable. I don't like log gables. The future is a foreign country, they will do things differently there - Simon Winchester. Thanks Don! That answers my questions. Guess I'll figure out a price now and see where it goes.

Start an epidemic. I would never put out a price for sawing a job like you are about to do with so little info to go by. There are too many factors you dont know or are taking for granted. From what I read , alls you got to go by is that your customer is wanting s square foot building I would really like to know how it is you are going to give this person an estimate not knowing the type of building or the type of roof he is looking for. I sure dont want to imply that you cant do it , just very curious on how you plan on doing it.

I have sawed and put up many , many log structures and there is no way for me to cut an estimate on the info you gave.

A man does not always grow wise as he grows old , but he always grows old as he grows wise. The "customer" is a relative, and the trees are standing on his property, which adjoins my property on the farm. At this point, All I am trying to do is to come up with a figure for turning about 6 acres of mature pine trees into logs suitable for log cabin building. One of my objectives here is to get a rough idea on how many logs it could take and then go from there.

The price I give him will include felling the trees, milling them into log cabin grade tongue and groove logs, debarking them and then removing the stumps. As of right now, I am seeing that this job will most likely last me through the whole winter months and I am pricing out the job to him based on time 4 months with a healthy profit included for me Right now I have figured a minimum of logs and then added to that figure to cover all of the possibilities, which brings me to around logs that are 16' long.

It will be up to him to find a builder who can work with 16' logs and design him a building using them. You will be making a kit home , in log school those are called kits. You should have your relative go see a bunch of log cabins and see if he wants the kit look or the real cabin look.

Uncle Buck, I to agree with that! But, it sure would be a lot less work, using a sawmill. I had considered making them the old traditional way, but knowing my relative, he doesnt have the time to take care of a traditional log cabin. One made in the "kit" style would more suit his lifestyle and time restrictions. This will be a second home to him, and at sqft will be much smaller than his primary home. Want to build a log cabin using trees.

Just cut down trees on my land to soon to use them. Dont want to use those log cabin kits. Need to buy trees. Having trouble finding blue prints to buy. Hi I live in northern Sweden, approx 12 mile south of the arctic circle. My question is Can we use the Alder to build these cabins? All are approx 12 to 18 inch diameter and perfectly straight for about 30ft.

Hi Sam, yes Alder is a great choice to use to build your log cabin. Alder is slightly harder than pine, which is another popular choice, and usually quite straight. Hope that helps. My property has lot of dead ash trees from the ash bore. My first question is is this a ok tree to use? Is ash a ok tree to use in general and should I be concerned with using the dead trees?

They are all still standing. Hi Kristopher, while most log cabins are built from live trees that have been felled, they can be built from dead standing trees as long as the logs are not infested or rotten.

One of the beauties of building from dead standing trees if they are not rotten is that mother nature will have already done her work, and the trees will be stable. Good luck with your lean to. The structure can range from a small cottage or cabin on the lake, or in the mountains, or a residence with sq.

Because the timbers are each 8 ft. How long should logs dry before sawing? The traditional rule-of-thumb for air-drying lumber is to allow one year of drying time per inch of wood thickness; this adage obviously only takes a few of the aforementioned variables into account, but it's at least a rough starting point in understanding the time investment required in order to properly air-dry. How much is a truckload of logs worth?

Hardwood pulp would be around a thousand. High grade hardwood logs would be much higher. How long will a log home last? What are the disadvantages of a log home? A disturbing detractor for log homes is the fact that pests are attracted to materials used. Increased Maintenance and Upkeep. It's no secret that log homes require much more maintenance than traditional homes.

Are log cabins cheaper to build? Are log or timber frame homes more expensive than conventionally constructed homes? The short answer: The shortest, but not-very-useful, answer is yes. That is true no matter who manufactures the logs or timber frame.
