What is a Robocall?
A robocall is an automated telephone call generated by a computer program called an autodialer. Once you answer the call, the program plays a pre-recorded message. Instead of speaking with a real person, you are interacting with a robot. Telemarketers and scammers often misuse this technology to provide unwanted and frequently misleading messages to innocent recipients. These messages have numerous goals—to provide unnecessary information, advertise products, or even scam you.
The Federal Communications Commission FCC reports that they receive over , complaints — nearly 60 percent of all the complaints they receive—each year regarding unwanted calls. Legal versus Illegal Robocalls The FCC has forbidden robocalls except if the recipient has granted their written permission. While nearly all robocalls are prohibited, there are five types of permitted robocalls allowed under the FTC rules without your consent.
Informational messages. These calls serve as a reminder or a notification. Robocalls about a flight cancellation, appointment reminders, or messages from a school fall into this category.
Callers may not solicit goods or services. Debt collection messages. Debt collectors may utilize robocalls. However, robocalls trying to sell you services to lower your debt are illegal. Political messages. Political robocalls are allowed but infrequent and are usually received during an election season. Donation requests from charities. Charitable organizations may place robocalls to send messages or fundraise, but only to its members or prior donors, and along with an opt-out option for future calls.
After some digging I found out what was going on. When someone owes a creditor money and skips out of town they make some attempt to locate them. If after a period of time they can't find this person they "sell" the debt to another collection agency for pennies on the dollar, and this agency starts from scratch with their own investigation, most likely calling the same people the first one did.
In my case this persons debt must have been substantial and sold numerous times because the calls would come from a different collection agency each time. Technically they are not breaking any laws because they have a legitimate right to seek out a bad debt they have acquired. If you explain you are not the person and have no knowledge of where they can find this person they will cross you off their list and not bother you again.
It is most likely when the debt is sold to another agency they don't tell them what people they have contacted already that were dead ends so the new agency starts from scratch and the process starts all over again. Hopefully, at some point, they will give up finding this person and the calls will stop. Helium: Ive wondered about people who answer Because they're waiting for an important call. That idiot you had was just amusing himself. How Id love to meet one of these idiots in person Id bet they're not all that tuff then.
I think,Donald wood that lives in the city of white plains, because he spends of time on the computer at the sterling club community center,in white plains I accused him but denied it I believe he is lying! But need more evidence! Buy a whistle. Next time just blow it as loud as you can into the phone.
Remember to move the phone away from your own ear! It is driving me crazy! I get the same thing and each time its a different name and different number but all from online medical supply Did you ever get yours resolved? Ignore it. Last year they called me 12 times a day. They call from India. I finally had enough and acted like I was Indian and said "yes I had 14 wives and needed 10, pills to produce more children".
The guy was dumbfounded. I called and called and called! They must of thought I was crazy! Well they drove me crazy so I gave it back to them! I blocked each of their phony numbers each time! Thank you for making me laugh this morning. I woke up exhausted and stressed again this morning as I worked late last night and have been woken up all morning with these calls.
I have to keep my phone on because of my job. Now my second job is writing down all the numbers that call me all day long. But your comment made me laugh , so thank you. Glad they stopped calling you, but no such luck with my boyfriend.
They call times a day and have for three years!!! If they call you you made an order likely during the past 5 to 7 years. They are relentless. I have threatened them well over a dozen times.
They do not make "clean" Meds- all I can say is threaten them that you plan to sue them for harassment. If you report a problem to the FTC and you give an email address, you will get an email reply that says we got your complaint. Once you report a problem, the information goes into a secure database that law enforcement agencies use for investigations.
The FTC doesn't handle individual cases; it uses information and shares it with other law enforcement agencies to build cases. If you give your contact information in your report, a law enforcment agency may contact you if it needs more information about the company or scam you reported. A law enforcement agency might contact you when it is getting ready to file a case against a company, or has settled a case against a company.
FTC just another Worthless government agency I signed up for home and cell in 's and they have done no good I saw shut them down. I Agree they do nothing nor does law enforcement have the time or resources to follow up for complaints. I have been getting a harassing call from Its a non working number of coarse. I started getting these calls on my land line after doing my mandatory update with the DOT. I also starting getting harassing calls on my cell phone, I don't give out my cell phone number usually, but it was on the DOT form.
Nice to pay the government to help organizations commit home invasion, harassment and economic terrorism against us. I think it is call conspiracy in the commission of a crime and is a felony offense, especially since they admit to the problem but offer no resolution. These people call all the time. Told them to remove me, but they will not. I'm on the do Not Call list, but doesn't seem to matter.
Their number is Last Friday this happened to me, plus they called my brother looking for me and asking questions and today they called my husbands cell looking for me. The lady said there's a serious claim against me and not to hang up and she wanted to transfer me to someone that could help me.
I told her she was full of it and I hung up. She called me back 3 times and left messages before calling my brother. I've since blocked her. She had a lot of my personal information that she gave to my brother and my husband, it's scary, talk about feeling violated. She's putting in a lot of time chasing me down, makes no sense. I have to agree with you that it doesn't make any sense.
If this happened to me, I would seriously feel violated. I also have many random numbers calling me that I have no idea who they belong to. The people that call sometimes don't leave a message. I don't have a call blocking app on my phone and I can't exactly go to phone store to block them due to being busy all the time, so I am just left with getting frustrated.
Now its getting scarey. Im so tired of the calls I did try to avoid answering. Last week, weird no. It was monitoring co. That is scary. As the saying goes, the best defense is a good offense.
You told them to mail it, right? Go on your state's Attorney General website to read how to file a complaint. Include your email address. They will email you a confirmation and later, any resolution. You're not helpless. Go get 'em!! How do you block a caller from a cell phone? He calls at least five times a day but when I answer, hangs up.
I called the number and a man said "Hello" so it's no a sales pitch. Probably someone who doesn't know what o do with his time, but I want him off my phone. Tell the person of they keep calling you that you are going to set an alarm and call them at 3 a. I did this to a woman that kept calling my cell and insisted it was the of someone she knew.
Stopped the calls When they call, they use my name, and they have all three of my numbers, they call one, then two, then three in a row. I'm pretty sure it's the same group. They call up to 22 times per day, each time from a different phone number.
Today they pretended to be both Apple telling me my account was hacked and Feinstein asking for a campaign donation. I'm deeply concerned about these last two attempts because they were trying to get a hold of my account and credit card information. I didn't fall for it, but it was more believable than in the past. I frequently enter the phone numbers calling on the FTC's website. I've never, in two years of reporting, received any confirmation emails or follow-up from FTC.
As I said, I'm fairly certain all of these calls are from the same people, because the calls are sometimes seconds apart, but the number is different every time.
It is impossible to block so many numbers. I want somebody to call me. I'd like to help finally stop these scam artists. Thank you for reporting the calls to the FTC.
When you report illegal calls, the FTC collects the phone numbers people complain about and release them each business day. This helps telecommunications carriers and other industry partners that are working on call blocking solutions. The same things has happened to me from all different numbers for over a year now.
I just stopped answering all calls that are not saved as a contact in my phone because I got so tired of being harassed and the callers get nasty when you argue with them about how the call is a scam and a lie.
I keep getting calls with different area codes at least 3 a day.
